Civil Engineering including an Industrial Year

BEng Hons UCAS Code

Course overview

Civil engineers are instrumental in building a sustainable and more resilient future. By designing, constructing and maintaining the infrastructure that underpins people’s lives, they play a vital role in tackling global challenges such as climate resilience, sustainable development and urban regeneration. At Nottingham, our Civil Engineering programmes empower you to become a part of – and lead – that change.

Our BEng Civil Engineering including an Industrial Year programme equips you with the technical expertise, creative thinking and leadership skills to deliver high-profile projects. From buildings and urban developments to transport networks and water systems, you’ll learn to engineer solutions that are safe, efficient and environmentally responsible.

Modules

Core modules

6 modules

Hydraulics 1

Hydraulics 1 introduces you to the subject of fluid mechanics, covering topics such as fundamental fluid properties, hydrostatic pressure, hydrostatic loads and buoyancy. You will learn to apply these principles to model applications relevant to civil engineering. The module provides a comprehensive introduction to hydraulics, equipping you with the knowledge needed to understand and analyse static-fluid systems in engineering contexts.

Introduction to Construction Management and Design

This is a problem-based design module introducing you to the roles and responsibilities of civil engineers. In Phase 1, you learn engineering drawing and communication skills, construction planning techniques, and risk management.

In Phase 2, you learn fundamental techniques of design, which you will apply to design a timber truss structure, based on a brief. You then learn how to prepare a construction plan based on your design, which you will execute to build your truss structure in a day-long, outdoor construction exercise. The assembled structures are then subject to loading, and the observed behaviour used to augment what you have learned about structural analysis and design.

Portfolio of Civil Engineering Studies 1

Portfolio of Civil Engineering Studies 1 provides you with an opportunity to develop critical knowledge of wider Civil Engineering topics including; drawing and design, profession and management, engineering surveying and technical communication. This is achieved by undertaking a series of ‘workshops’ during the year.

In addition, you are introduced to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework – undertaking your own CPD exercise. As part of this process, you select additional optional workshops to take that will support your development or which align with your own professional interests; optional workshops are available on topics including computational methods, transportation, and experimental science. This CPD process mirrors the one graduate engineers undertake in the process of obtaining Chartership.

Structural Analysis 1

Structural Analysis 1 covers fundamental topics in structural engineering, including analysis of statically determinate trusses, beams, and frames, computation of section properties, stress and strain analysis, elasticity, computation of stresses due to axial force, shear force, bending and torsion moments, and plasticity.

You will develop an understanding of elastic analysis for determinate structures, knowledge about stresses and strains in linear elements, and the fundamentals of plasticity. The module aims to build confidence in carrying out structural analysis and understanding the behaviour of structures under various forces.

Civil Engineering Mathematics 1

In this module, you will develop the mathematical understanding and analytical skills needed for civil engineering analysis and design. You’ll draw on real civil engineering problems in areas such as structural analysis, geotechnics and hydraulics.

After consolidating key A level concepts, you’ll progress to topics including differential equations, advanced integration techniques and methods for solving systems of equations. The focus is on developing confidence and fluency, so you can apply mathematics as a practical tool for engineering problem solving and design.

Geotechnics 1

Geotechnics 1 introduces you to the fundamental principles of geotechnics, including soil phase relationships, soil compaction, effective stress, stress analysis and strength criteria. You will learn to apply these principles to civil engineering problems and develop an appreciation of the role of local geology in design. The module provides a solid foundation in geotechnics, essential for further studies in civil engineering.
